La Viñuela

La Viñuela is the municipality (ayuntamiento) Casa Estrellita is located in. About five kilometers from the Casa it provides basic infrastructure to villagers and those living in the nearby campo.

The village developed during the 18th century around a tavern called La Venta La Viña, which fed and watered weary travellers en route between the coast and inland Granada. Its name derived from the vines that grow in the region.

Today it is home to a population of approximately 2000.

La Viñuela is dominated by the landscape of La Maroma, which belongs to the mountain range known as Sierra de Tejeda and at a height of 2,068 metres (6,785 ft) is the highest mountain in the Axarquía. Another dominant feature of the landscape is that of Lake Viñuela, a reservoir holding up to 170 million cubic metres of water. It is surrounded by picnic areas, some with barbecues. While swimming is not allowed here, non-motorised water sports are. In season you will find boat rentals close to the Hotel Viñuela on the other side of the lake.

In Viñuela you will find some shops, bars & restaurants, and the local medical center. An ambulance is stationed here as well.

The local fiestas begin at Easter, usually mid-March or April. In May there is the pilgrimage from the village to the hamlets of Los Gómez and Los Romanes. In mid-July we celebrate the Feria de Los Gómez in honour of the Virgen del Carmen. At the end of July/beginning of August are the celebrations for the feast day of the town's patron saint, the Virgen de las Angustias at the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows which is located in the area of Los Ramírez. Mid-August sees the fiesta of Los Romanes, which honours the Virgen de la Milagrosa (Virgin of the Miracles). Finally, in mid-September, we celebrate the Feria de la Pasa, to coincide with the harvesting of grapes to be made into raisins.
