Velez-Malaga

Like Torre del Mar, the Velez-Malaga area had be settled by Phoenicians during the 8th century B.C., followed by Romans and the Nasrids. Today Velez, as it locally known, is the most important city in the Axarquia with a population of about 75.000.

While being close to Torre del Mar (which formally is a part of Velez-Malaga), it is much less touristic and mainly focused on serving the local population as a commercial, cultural, and transportation hub.

As such Velez-Malaga offers excellent shopping opportunities for your daily needs, gas stations, a state-of-the-art hospital, and a bus station, providing services along the Costa del Sol, including to Malaga Airport and inland. A tram service linking Velez-Malaga with Torre del Mar has been suspended since 2012.

Velez-Malaga may be worth a stroll, but probably not a full day trip. From the remains of the castle on the hill you have nice views towards Torre del Mar, across the valley and into the mountain ranges. Although little is known of his early years, there is a place claiming to be the childhood home of Don Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. Some churches sprinkled across the city may be worth a look, as may be the remains of the city walls, including the Royal and the Antequera Gate.

If you like to take a trip into the mountains, MA-4111, leaving Velez-Malaga to the northeast, may be a good choice. It connects Velez-Malaga with the white villages of Arenas, Archez, and Canillas de Albaida. From Canillas de Albaida you can take A-7207 via Competa to Torrox or A-7206 via Sayalonga and Algarrobo back to the coast.

But mostly you will go to the industrial/commercial area of Velez-Malaga, located between the city center and the coastal motorway. Here you'll find everything you may need in daily supplies. The first stop, even before going to Casa Estrellita, should be one of the supermarkets (e.g. Lidl close to the motorway, with a good butcher's shop attached, Mercadona, or Eroski in the El Ingenio Shopping Center) to stock up on food and beverages for the first days of your stay. If you arrive on a weekend or late at night the gas stations near the motorway provide a limited selection of food as well.
