Hiking Andalusia Alcaucin Canillas Viñuela

Andalusia is a wonderful area to visit for a hiking holiday. However, as with all hiking holidays, first of all you need to select an area which will give excellent access to a good number of walks. The area east of Malaga offers just that within the Parque Natural de Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama.

Hikes vary from easy to difficult with the highest point being La Maroma at a height of 2069 metres. Therefore the region can easily cater for all tastes and abilities.

The landscape is spectacular from the coast to the mountains. The area is blessed with a beautiful coastline, high summits, dramatic crags, wonderfully deep ravines, delightful rivers and all this in one region! The walking is truly wonderful.

While a lot of hikes enter the Parque Natural from the south, there are also a lot of hikes starting at Periana, Alcaucin or Canillas de Aceituno, including hikes to the top of La Maroma. Parking lots are usually available at the starting points, and most trails are marked reasonably well.

If you feel a bit more adventurous you may wish to try the western side of the lake as well. Start directly from Casa Estrellita and head towards Comares, Benamargosa, or Benamocarra. These hikes will guarantee some spectacular views of the Mediterranean.

As the terrain may get a little bit rough and mountainous in the ranges, be sure you understand the challenges of the trail you picked, wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and take sufficient water!
