Comares

Comares is another typical white village with pre-Roman history. The Moorish era of Comares ended in 1487, when the village, which due to its strategic location was an important bastion for the Moors, fell to the Christians.

Comares is located on a rocky outcrop and offers fantastic panoramic views to the coast, stirring the nickname "Balcon de la Axarquia". At the same time the exposed location also means a somewhat arduous drive up the hill. Schedule sufficient time for a visit.

In Comares there is no really remarkable architecture. The most striking building is the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. For dining or refreshments there are some pretty good restaurants, e.g. the Table Mountain or the Mill of the Grandfathers (Molino de los Abuelos), located in a restored olive mill. Funny fact: A tour of the village is marked by footprints in the middle of the streets.

Culturally Comares is known for the Verdiales, an early form of Flamenco, with guitars, violin, tambourine, dancers and singers, which still is celebrated during the fiestas.

However, Comares provides some interesting outdoor activities. In addition to the currently (2016) longest zip line in Spain, there are three "Via Ferratas" of varying difficulty on the steep walls below the village. Via Ferratas are prepared climbing routes, with pitons, ropes and kicks permanently anchored in the rock. However, they nevertheless require knowledge in mountaineering and appropriate equipment. Those who prefer a more comfortable tour may enjoy the donkey taxi, operating in season.

Please follow us on a short tour of the village!
